Dal 1499 proprietà della casata dei principi Borromeo questa fortificazione medievale perfettamente conservata nel tempo era la “Sentinella del Lago”, elemento chiave del sistema difensivo del Verbano. Successivamente trasformata dalla nobile famiglia che ancora ne è proprietaria in prestigiosa dimora, dal 1988 la Rocca ospita il Primo Museo della Bambola in Italia.
Sospeso tra cielo e lago incastonato in uno sperone di roccia alto 76 metri, sorge l’antico eremo di Santa Caterina raggiungibile via lago tramite una scalinata di 80 gradini. Risalente al XII secolo e trasformato più volte nel corso dei secoli, questo complesso spettacolare e suggestivo fu proclamato monumento nazionale nel 1914.
